Why Hire An Interior Designer?

Interior design is often considered a luxury service. And while it’s true design is elective, if you’ve already decided to build a custom home, renovate a property or just refurnish a room, hiring an interior designer can save you time and money in the long run.

Decisions snow ball. There are many decisions needed early on to keep your project running on schedule. Those choices will dictate selections down the line. Say you choose a creamy off-white window color that blends beautifully with your exterior stone. Did you consider that that color will also be on the inside of your home? Unless you upgraded to dual colored windows, you’re hopefully thinking of a similar tonal palette indoors. This is where an expert can come in handy. I know the entire process and I can look ahead to make sure we’re implementing your total vision with every decision along the way.

Designers think about furnished space. If you’re planning for two sofas flanking the fireplace or a dining table for 12, involving a designer before your floor plan is set will leave no unwanted surprises come move in day. Architects, builders and designers all offer an invaluable perspective on the floor plan. I think about furniture arrangement, sight lines, artwork opportunities and focal points. Sometimes the smallest tweak can make all the difference and discovering that during the drafting stages is much more cost effective than moving walls after framing.

Designers offer unbiased opinions. I am often hired to help couples create a space that reflects their individual styles and needs. I am the third party for difficult decisions, but also the eye that transforms a space into a cohesive blend that everyone can be proud of.

I am an expert. Where are you going to get the most bang for your buck? When and where does it make sense to splurge? This applies to finish selections for new construction and renovation, but also furniture. Where do you invest and what guidelines make an investment something you can live with for years to come (See my next blog post for some insider tips)?
